The scene takes place in front of the old church of Saint-Germain-en-Laye. In the foreground, anti-religious masquerade: sansculottes donned vestments and carry a censer, a monstrance, a stick, etc.

These acts of vandalism quickly stopped because they discredit the declaration of human rights and shocked the Christian revolutionaries. The ancient church of Saint-Germain-en-Laye is identifiable thanks to Israel Silvestre engraving.
