Angelika Kauffmann has developed during their long stay in London from 1766 to 1781 a portrait style, which follows in many fields of view by Joshua Reynolds, but is very independent. Typical of the painter is their empathetic portrayal people whose effect is sometimes complacent, but consistently imbued with the intention to give the model a touch of grace. The influence of English portraiture is reflected in the emphasis on the individual and in the absence of status symbols. So John Simpson presented (1738-before 1789) in a casual attitude, just as it would not be aware that he is painted. This as a "Grand Tour Pose '(Wassyng Roworth) designated posture, the longingly looking into the distance views, as well as antique props like urn and kanellierter pillars, leave no doubt that John Simpson felt very connected to the city of Rome and this in a portrait wanted to demonstrate. This includes the presentation of the man who precious suit that reminds both in style and in the material and in the colors of the portraits of Anthony van Dyck and in this form was the costume Grand-tourists. While here, the sum of all the details refer to a reminder of days gone by in Italy, stunned the combination of antiques and contemporary furnishings, as appropriate for the ruined landscape would be a stone pedestal and not one related with velvet chair as a seat for the sitter. The Portrait of John Simpson is one of the best works, painted the Angelika Kauffmann in London. A variant thereof, it is a representation of full-length with different details, is in the National Portrait Gallery in London. The original naming of what is represented as "Lord" John Simpson is based on an incorrect tradition from the 19th century. Literature: Wassyng Roworth, Wendy: Angelica Kauffman.
