The 18th century work of art with the title "The Flight into Egypt" was painted by the Italian painter Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. Painted towards the end of Tiepolo’s life, when he was in Madrid working for the king, this haunting picture shows the Holy Family and their donkey after disembarking from a boat that ferried them across an imaginary Nile river. A guardian angel prostrates himself, while the boatman clasps his hands in adoration. The picture, which employs a daring use of empty space and a plunging diagonal composition, is one in a series of four that formed an imaginary narrative.
