In 1917 Leopold Zborowski, a Polish-born poet-turned-art dealer, provided the impoverished Amedeo Modigliani with a space in his apartment in which to work, as well as art supplies, models, and a daily stipend. While ensconced in Zborowski's home and at his request, Modigliani embarked on an ambitious series of just over two dozen female nudes. These works combined the artist's distinctively stylized masklike treatment of the face--derived from a wealth of archaic Greek, Asian, ancient Egyptian, and African sources--with poses that recognizably cited works by his predecessors, including not only revered old masters such as Titian, Giorgione, and Diego Velazquez, but also avant-garde provocateurs such as Édouard Manet. However, Modigliani avoided any hint of anecdote, presenting his viewers with the frank carnality of his models. Some of these works caused a scandal when they debuted at Berthe Weill's gallery in December 1917, and police removed one nude from the gallery window for its perceived impropriety.Stretching beyond the edges of the canvas at left and barely contained within its edges at right, this model-cropped at the knee-occupies a shallow, claustrophobic space. Most likely looking to The Odalisque, 1745, by Francois Boucher as a reference, Modigliani's nude lies on her stomach on the standard prop for the series--a dark crimson cushion that luridly sets off the warm flesh tones of the figure. The rounded contours of the pillow heighten the sinuous effect of the successive curves of the model, particularly along her back, buttocks, and thighs. While her body suggests litheness, her face remains stony, showing the hollowed eyes of the artist's mature idiom and the inexpressive button mouth.Judith Dolkart, The Barnes Foundation: Masterworks (New York: Skira Rizzoli, 2012), 336
