This self-portrait painted in chiaroscuro reveals the face of the painter and sculptor Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux marked by illness which carried him a few months later.
Painting Carpeaux is little known compared to the immense fame of his sculpted work. Yet Carpeaux was a portraitist entering, leaving himself and his family always intense images by deliberately keeping a blank look. It identifies Carpeaux 13 self-portraits
