Philipon was the founder and director of "La Caricature" (1830) and the "Charivari" (1832), satirical newspapers violently opposed to the government of the July Monarchy. It was in 1848 that he met the young Gustave Doré (16 years old) and he signed her to a contract to illustrate the "Journal for fun" he had just created.
